Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations
Microsoft's enterprise ERP for finance, supply chain, and manufacturing — the sibling to Business Central for organisations that outgrow BC.
Microsoft's enterprise-tier ERP, positioned above Business Central.
Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (F&O) is Microsoft's enterprise ERP, formerly known as AX (Axapta). It's the sibling product to Business Central: BC targets 10–500 employees, F&O picks up from there and scales to global enterprise. It runs on Azure as cloud SaaS with two annual releases (plus proactive quality updates).
F&O's centre of gravity is finance and supply-chain-heavy operations, particularly manufacturing and distribution. It competes with SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion, and Infor CloudSuite for mid-large enterprise deals. It wins most often when the buyer is already deep in the Microsoft stack (Azure, M365, Power Platform, Dataverse) and wants that alignment at the enterprise ERP tier.
Strengths & trade-offs
What buyers routinely love — and what they realise 12 months in.
Strengths
-
Deep Microsoft stack integrationAzure, Power Platform, Dataverse, Teams — enterprise-grade version of the BC integration story.
-
Manufacturing & SCM depthDiscrete, lean, process manufacturing, plus advanced warehousing and transportation.
-
Global finance capabilitiesMulti-entity, multi-currency, localizations for ~40 countries.
-
Extension architectureUpgrade-safe extensions via X++ and Power Platform — no more one-way customization traps.
Trade-offs
-
Implementation complexityEnterprise-grade rollouts run 12–24 months. Not a fast go-live.
-
Partner delivery quality varies widelyMicrosoft's partner-first model means outcome depends heavily on the partner you pick.
-
SAP still deeper in true global manufacturingFor $5B+ multi-plant global manufacturers, S/4HANA usually wins the depth comparison.
-
Reporting requires Power BI investmentNative reporting is functional; serious analytics means Power BI + a data lake.
What it costs
Per-user pricing model, similar to Business Central but at enterprise tier.
Base finance + operations user. Full functional access.
Limited-access users (approvals, timesheets, self-service).
Read-only / lightweight users.
Partner-led. Mid-market on the low end; multi-national enterprise higher.

What we tell clients about D365 F&O
F&O is the right pick when the Microsoft alignment is real. When it's just aspirational, SAP or Oracle often win.
For enterprises genuinely deep in the Microsoft ecosystem — Azure infrastructure, M365 as the productivity layer, Power Platform for extensibility — F&O is the natural enterprise ERP. The technical alignment is a real productivity lever.
The trap: enterprises picking F&O because Microsoft feels like a 'safer' pick, without genuine stack alignment. F&O implementations are complex; the wrong partner ruins outcomes. And for pure manufacturing depth, S/4HANA is still the deeper platform.
