Overview

The system Fortune 500s pick when the ERP has to run everything, everywhere.

S/4HANA is SAP's next-generation flagship, replacing the ECC line. It runs on the HANA in-memory database, which collapses the traditional OLTP/OLAP split and gives finance and operations real-time analytics on live transactional data. It comes in three flavours: public cloud (SaaS, most standardised), private cloud (single-tenant, more configurable), and on-prem (maximum control, maximum weight).

S/4HANA's centre of gravity is complex, global operations — multi-country manufacturing, deep supply chains, and finance teams that need statutory reporting across dozens of legal entities. It is the wrong tool for a 200-person services firm; it is often the only tool for a $5B manufacturer.

Strengths & trade-offs

What buyers routinely love — and what they realise 12 months in.

Strengths

  • Industry breadth is unmatched25+ industry solutions, from discrete manufacturing to utilities to public sector.
  • Real-time analytics on live dataHANA removes the batch-ETL gap between running the business and reporting on it.
  • Global compliance built inStatutory reporting, localisations, and multi-language support for ~50 countries out of the box.
  • Deep manufacturing & supply chainMRP, production planning, EWM, and IBP are the reference implementations in the market.

Trade-offs

  • Implementations are long and expensive18–36 months and $10M–$100M is normal. Public cloud compresses this, at the cost of flexibility.
  • High total cost of ownershipLicences, HANA infrastructure, integration, and specialised talent all stack.
  • Specialised talent is scarceA good SAP FI/CO or SD consultant is not a generalist ERP consultant — expect senior rates.
  • Standardisation vs flex tensionPublic cloud forces best-practice processes; that's a virtue for some, a blocker for others.
Pricing

What it costs

Enterprise agreements only — no published list price. Costs are shaped by users, modules, deployment model, and industry solution.

Public cloud
$$$ subscription

Per-FUE (Full Use Equivalent). Fastest and cheapest to stand up; least configurable.

Private cloud (RISE) Most common
$$$$ subscription

Single-tenant on SAP-managed infra. Configuration flexibility closer to on-prem.

On-prem
$$$$$ perpetual

Perpetual licence + 22% annual maintenance + hardware. Highest ceiling, highest control.

Implementation
$5M+ one-time

Global multi-plant rollouts trend toward $50M–$100M+.

What we tell clients about S/4HANA

The question is almost never 'is S/4HANA good enough.' It's 'is your organisation ready to run it.'

S/4HANA is the ERP against which every other enterprise ERP is measured. The trap we see repeatedly is a mid-cap company being sold an enterprise-grade S/4HANA program they can't operationally absorb — a 24-month implementation, a $30M budget, and a team that has never run SAP before.

For the right company — global, complex, manufacturing-heavy — S/4HANA is a decade-plus commitment that pays back. For everyone else, the honest answer is that a lighter cloud ERP will land faster, cost less, and cover the actual scope of the business. Our job in selection engagements is to be direct about which one you are.
