Dynamics 365 Business Central
The natural ERP for a Microsoft 365 shop — per-user pricing, native Teams and Outlook, and a huge partner ecosystem, aimed squarely at 10–500 employee companies.
The successor to Dynamics NAV, rebuilt as a cloud-first ERP for small and mid-market companies.
Business Central is Microsoft's cloud ERP for companies that outgrow QuickBooks or Xero but aren't ready for — or don't need — the weight of NetSuite or Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations. It's a direct descendant of Dynamics NAV, re-platformed for Azure and re-plumbed around the Microsoft 365 stack.
Its unique wedge is stack fit: if your company already runs on Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, and Power BI, Business Central slots in with less friction than any other ERP. Per-user pricing keeps the entry point low, and the partner ecosystem (VARs and ISVs) is one of the deepest in the market — almost every vertical has a Business Central add-on.
Strengths & trade-offs
What buyers routinely love — and what they realise 12 months in.
Strengths
-
Deep Microsoft 365 integrationApprovals in Teams, invoice previews in Outlook, native Power BI — day-one productivity.
-
Per-user pricing scales cleanly$70–$100/user/month with no separate platform fee. Predictable at any size.
-
Huge partner & ISV ecosystemHundreds of vertical add-ons (LS Retail, ChargeLogic, Continia, Jet Reports) shorten scope.
-
AL & extensions are upgrade-safePost-NAV, customisations are isolated extensions — monthly platform updates don't break them.
Trade-offs
-
Manufacturing is lighter than F&OBasic and light-assembly manufacturing works; complex MRP or process manufacturing pushes you to F&O.
-
ISV add-ons often requiredFor AP automation, advanced WMS, EDI, or subscription billing you'll almost always add a paid add-on.
-
Forced upgrade cadenceTwo major cloud releases a year, monthly minor updates — you cannot defer them like on-prem NAV.
-
Reporting is a mixed bagNative reporting is dated; Power BI or Jet Reports is the real answer, and both add cost.
What it costs

Where Business Central is the right pick
Microsoft-stack company
If M365, Teams, and Azure AD are already the backbone, Business Central integrates deepest with the least glue.
Post-QuickBooks upgrade (SMB)
10–100 employee company that needs real ERP mechanics without NetSuite-tier pricing.
Vertical SMB via ISV
Retail (LS Retail), field service (Continia), non-profit (Wiise) — the ISV catalog handles the vertical layer.
Multi-entity SMB
Intercompany and consolidations work well for a handful of entities — less mature than NetSuite past 10 subsidiaries.
What it plays well with
Common systems teams connect on day one.
- Microsoft 365 (Teams, Outlook, Excel)
- Power BI
- Power Automate
- Dataverse
- Shopify (native)
- HubSpot
- Salesforce
- Continia (AP automation)
- Jet Reports
- Azure AD / Entra
- LS Retail

What we tell clients about Business Central
If Microsoft 365 is already your operating system, Business Central is the ERP with the shortest distance from decision to daily use.
Business Central is the ERP we most often recommend for growing SMBs already committed to the Microsoft ecosystem. The per-user pricing model is honest, the extension architecture keeps you upgrade-safe, and the partner network means you can almost always find someone who's done your exact vertical before.
Where it goes wrong is scope. Companies push Business Central into complex manufacturing or 20-entity finance because they want to stay on the Microsoft stack, then wonder why the ISV bill is bigger than the licence bill. Our advice: use it for what it's genuinely great at, and step up to Dynamics 365 F&O when the size or complexity crosses the line.
